Recently, a friend of mine was going through a difficult break up and reached out to a new group of friends, in the hope of filling that void that is left after someone so close to us leaves. What she was hoping to find was support, some light fun to take her obsessive mind off it’s one way track and some form of genuine human connection. Instead, the conversation turned to a general agreement that we need to learn to live on our own, to stop leaning on each other and re-learn independence. Sadly, my friend left the ‘party’ with no new friends and an even emptier heart.
Astrologically, the sky is asking us to step up the plate, to be mature with our relationships and in the way we relate. We are all being tested. Is it really a step forward for us to be more independent? Wouldn’t this mean more cars on the road going in the same direction with only one person in them, more apartments being built where a family home once was? Is our striving for independence really benefiting the family unit ~ the core of our society? Sadly, we’re not encouraged to be vulnerable, and therefore, it’s not safe. What seems safe is to retreat, toe the line and keep up with the ever increasing pace of society that is really designed to suit the energy and lifestyle of a 21 year old male! Most of us aren’t.
As the holiday season is upon us, we have some very profound configurations occurring in the sky. There is a flavour of change rising from the pot. Yes, change is the nature of life, but as life works in cycles, so do the planets that govern us. Jupiter and Uranus are conjunct (standing close, holding hands and operating together) in Pisces. Uranus is the God of change and is associated with Aquarius (the revolutionary, the rebel, the mad scientist). His way is sudden, like lightning and electricity, bright ideas, and there is a lack of emotion. Jupiter on the other hand is jovial, abundant and the wise teacher, ruling truth seeking Sagittarians. He expands what ever he touches, for better or worse, and rules things such as learning, Grandfathers, teachers, Guru’s.
When the 2 of them join together like they are, the lessons can be big, fast, sudden and shocking. Outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are generational. By this, I mean that they don’t operate on a personal level in your day to day life. They will be sitting in an area of your life (a house in your birth chart), but their expression is via the community, world events, and by one or 2 key figures who hold the torch for us all. Julian Assange is one such figure. What we have learnt (Jupiter) from what his endeavours have exposed has been shocking (Uranus) for both the public and world leaders. Truth has been exposed and change must come about because of it. We can no longer act as if we don’t know the truth. We are forced to change…but will we?
When Jupiter and Uranus are together in the sky, it is important for us all to be implementing change, to be shaking things up however uncomfortable. When we fail to utilise the energy presented to us, the cosmos does it for us, as we saw in the 1983 Ash Wednesday bush fires (the worst Australia had ever seen): Jupiter and Uranus were conjunct in fiery Sagittarius.
Coinciding with this tango, we have another of the big guns in the outer planet world exposing governments and the evident flaws in the corporate structure. Pluto, the most outer and mysterious of the planets (sub planets depending on how you consider it) is in Capricorn. Pluto is the destroyer so that the new may be born: the phoenix rising from the ashes. Anything we cling too tightly to that serves us no longer will be destroyed if we fail to acknowledge and release it ourselves. It is associated with power and therefore money, governments, war, sex, death and rebirth ~ to name a few! Capricorn is a sign associated with business, authority, governments, upholding rules and regulations and continues to strive for success.
Pluto moved into Capricorn in January 2008. Since then, we have seen an ongoing economic crisis, several ‘bail outs’ across continents, acknowledgement of government over spending, dramatic changes in power (a black President and a female Prime minister!), and exposition of what has really been going on in a war that never seems to end. When we were kids, I recall that wars ended…and when one began, it was shocking.
The last time Pluto was in Capricorn was from Jan 1762 – Nov 1778. In that time there was dramatic turn around in the lives of humans on the planet by way of the Industrial Revolution, which also seems to have never ended! This ongoing striving and this sea of information overload brings me back to my initial topic ~ we’re being challenged to step up to the plate to be loving toward one another. Our individualism and striving for more has taken us so far away from knowing how to respectfully relate with one another that it is easier not to.
Unfortunately, it’s so common now to read of war, injustice and destruction, that we voluntarily bring it into our homes via movies & TV and call it entertainment! We’ve saturated ourselves and are over whelmed with the external world that things such as compassion, thoughtfulness, generosity and selflessness are words we associate with the Dalai Lama and saints, more so than ourselves in our daily lives. Surely, if we nurture this planet and each other, which then allows us to grow our own food and share resources…where is this need for money and greed? It may be a far off ideal, but it is questions like this that Pluto in Capricorn poses to us.
As this 2010 holiday season gets into full swing, we have the opportunity to use the configuration of the planets to our advantage. Around the 25th Dec, be aware of situations that may trigger you into an old way of operating. Don’t take things too personally and if you do bite the hook, now is a great time to look at what lies beneath it. Dare to dig deep. There is much to be shared and at this time if we can put our own importance aside and share the goodness, instead of hoarding it for ourselves. There may be a wealth of goodness waiting to surprise you!
New Years Eve could see some emotions running high, or the opportunity for intense, passionate exchange! Jupiter and Uranus will be in a partile conjunction (in the same degree ~ which increases its potential) and in a harmonious connection to the Moon and Venus in Scorpio. Just make sure the change you bring in is what you truly want and not a projected ideal…there could be a veil of deception, or quite the awakening!
Here’s to sharing this amazing planet in 2011. I’m happy to be here with you all.
